Ever since I shared that my twin brother, Clifford, and I were awarded the Cowrywise Scholarship, I’ve received quite a number of messages from Nigerian students asking the same question:
“How did you apply?”
Instead of replying to everyone individually, I thought I’d put everything together in one post that anyone can refer to. Hopefully, it makes the process a little less confusing for future applicants.
📖 You can read how my twin brother and I won the Cowrywise Scholarship here.
Step 1: Join the Scholarship Waitlist
If applications haven’t opened yet, the first thing you should do is join the official waitlist. That way, you’ll be notified as soon as applications begin.

Step 2: Create Your Cowrywise Account
You’ll need a Cowrywise account during the application process, so don’t wait until the last minute.
I recommend creating your account ahead of time so it’s one less thing to worry about when applications open.

Step 3: Read the Eligibility Requirements
Before you apply, make sure you meet the requirements for that year’s scholarship. They may change slightly from one edition to another, so always read the official guidelines carefully.
Step 4: Take the Application Seriously
Don’t rush through the application, especially the essay questions.
The organizers want to know about you, your journey, your goals, and why the scholarship matters to you. Write in your own words and let your personality show. You don’t need to sound overly formal, just be genuine.
Step 5: Prepare Your Documents
Have all the required documents ready before you start. This usually includes things like your student ID, admission letter, academic results, passport photograph, and any other documents requested.
Step 6: Submit Early
Don’t wait until the deadline. Network issues and website traffic can happen, so it’s always safer to submit early.
A Small Promise
Receiving this scholarship made me realize how many students are actively looking for opportunities but simply don’t know where to find them or how to apply.
Going forward, I’ll try to share scholarship opportunities, application tips, and updates here on my blog whenever I come across them. My hope is that more Nigerian students can benefit from these opportunities, just as I did.
If this guide helps even one person secure a scholarship, then writing it was absolutely worth it.
I wish you the very best, and I hope I’ll be congratulating you on your own scholarship soon.
